Tapo and Kasa Devices Unable to be Controlled in the App
Recent updates may have expanded access to feature(s) discussed in this FAQ. Visit your product's support page, select the correct hardware version for your device and check either the Datasheet or the firmware section for the latest improvements added to your product.
This FAQ will walk you through a few typical cases for troubleshooting a Kasa or Tapo device that their app cannot control.
Case 1. I cannot use the Tapo or Kasa app to control my smart devices in the local network
- Check the smart device's LED status as per the User Guide. If the LED status shows that the device is not working properly, please reset and re-configure it.
- If the smart device was working fine before, confirm if there are any changes in the router or the network environment.
- Go to the “Device Settings” page on the Tapo or Kasa app to check the signal strength of the Tapo or Kasa device.
- If the signal strength ranges from -60dBm to -40dBm, the smart device has a good signal from the router.
- If the signal strength is less than -60dBm, the signal strength from the router is too weak. In this case, please move the smart device closer to your router for a try.
- Upgrade the smart device to the latest firmware
Case 2. I cannot use the Tapo/Kasa app to control my smart devices remotely
- Make sure you can control the smart device in the local network. If you cannot, please refer to Case 1 to troubleshoot.
- To upgrade the smart device to the latest firmware, you may refer to the instructions:
- Change the DNS server to 8.8.8.8 on your home modem/router.
- Ensure the router is working properly. Connect your phone or laptop to the router's Wi-Fi network and check if the device has internet access.
- Disable firewall settings if there is one on your home router, then reboot the router.
Case 3. Cannot control the smart devices through the physical button
If you cannot control your smart device through the physical button, it may be a wiring issue or a defective device. For smart switches, please check the following resources:
