How to Change the Power Supply for Tapo Smart Doorbell (Tapo D235)

Tapo D235 supports both battery powering and hardwire powering. Follow the instructions below to switch the power supply method.

How to switch to battery powering

To use the battery to power your doorbell, you must first remove the doorbell from the hardwire circuit. Detach the doorbell from the wall and remove the wires. Then install the doorbell back. It will switch to battery powering automatically.

How to switch to hardwire powering

If the doorbell is properly wired to your home circuit, it will automatically use hardwire powering and cannot switch to battery powering. For detailed installation guide, please refer to How to Install Tapo Doorbell (Tapo D235). When your doorbell is hardwire powered, you can choose to enable Always-On Mode, which supports 24/7 Recording. Note that to enable Always-On Mode, you must first bypass your existing chime by inserting a jumper wire.

Why the doorbell exits Always-On Mode Due to Battery Drain

If the battery drains too fast in Always-On Mode that the doorbell exists Always-On Mode automatically, it may be caused by:

  • Low output voltage from the transformer, which should be between 8~24V for the hardwired doorbell to work.
  • Insufficient power of the transformer. The recommended power for the transformer is over 10VA.
  • Existing chime not properly bypassed. This will result in insufficient power.
  • Connecting more than one doorbell working in Always-On Mode to the transformer, even if the transformer's power is over 10VA.
